Digging In: It’s All About Coal

In southwestern Pennsylvania, we are sitting on top of history; a fascinating, ugly, powerful regional history. This presentation is all about coal and coal mining in Southwestern PA: its formation, by-products, extraction, the mining life, strikes and unions, regional mining disasters, and mine damage and reclamation. 

You will meet a cast of characters whose lives impacted, for good or bad, the behemoth coal industry. We will focus on our region, including sites such as local coke ovens, coal towns, reclamation sites, and efforts to keep the history of coal alive in our region so that participants can go out and see for themselves. 

So dig in: it’s our history!
