Did a colleague say something witty at work today? Did you overhear your neighbors arguing last night? Did someone in line at the grocery store this weekend tell a sad tale while at the checkout? There are conversations happening all around us, but we rarely pay attention to what is truly being said. For our October meeting, let’s put together all the snippets, sounds, and vibrant voices to create an eavesdrop poem. Participants are challenged to collect all the chatter throughout the day and write down what they hear. Sitting quietly in public places, going to a coffee shop, or even browsing through a retail store can lead to a wealth of great words!

As part of our discussion, we will also be investigating what makes a “terrible” poem. Is there such a thing as “bad” poetry? What makes a poem successful or even famous?  Participants are encouraged to bring an example or two of works by published poets that they feel are not good poems.
