International Mother Language Day was declared by the United Nations as a worldwide annual day to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. Though International Mother Language Day originated in my home country Bangladesh, far away from our beloved Pittsburgh, its story is unique and inspiring.

To celebrate this day, Mt. Lebanon Public Library has arranged a poetry reading on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, from 7:00 PM - 8:15 PM, featuring immigrant poets Tuhin Das (Bangladesh), Olena Boryshpolets (Ukraine), and Anouar Rahmani (Algeria), who will read in their respective home languages: Bengali, Ukrainian, and Arabic along with English translation on the screen. We have a guest speaker this year, Kandala Singh (India), who is a poet and is going to read in English and will talk about why she engages with the influence of her mother tongue and the politics of language in her writing.

This program is a partnership between Mt Lebanon Public Library and City of Asylum.
