Claire Keegan’s contemporary novella, FOSTER, tells the tale of a young Irish girl who is sent to a distant farm to live with relatives while her mother gives birth. The Kinsellas nurture this quiet girl, and she discovers their world of secrets and surprises. Keegan’s writing entrances the reader with its lyrical simplicity and beauty.

Like the novella, THE QUIET GIRL is told from the young girl’s point of view. The film features stunning cinematography, attention to the simplest of details, and an innate vision of the developing relationship between the quiet girl and the Kinsellas. In an interview Director Colm Bairead said, After you see the movie, give a big hug to anyone who nurtured you.

Join Connie Booth and Elaine Wertheim for a two week exploration of the novel and the film.

Connie Booth is a retired English teacher, who specializes in American literature.

Elaine Wertheim teaches art history and film studies throughout the community.
