Brenda Tate is a lifelong resident of Pittsburgh’s historic Pittsburgh Hill District. She served in the field of law enforcement for 40 years as a Pittsburgh Police officer and detective. She distinguished herself as one of the first African American women to serve in Pittsburgh. As a Pittsburgh Bureau of police detective, she served in both the Sex Assault and the Pittsburgh Initiative to Reduce Crime Units. She was hand selected to serve in the Witness and Dignitary Protection Unit providing dignitary protection to presidents, kings, queens, Rosa Parks, the Dalai Lama and as well as high-level government officials and dignitaries.
In 2024 Brenda wrote and published her book, Journal of a Black Women in Blue: Navigating Policing, Addiction, Abuse & Survival. Her story is an inspiration to anyone struggling with addiction, confronting racism or dealing with domestic abuse. Brenda states, “My journal is meant for anyone struggling who refuse to be defined by their mistakes and whose own story of struggle can lead to a triumphant outcome.”
